If you’re having a party, why not order a 72 pint cask?

To serve it you just need a sturdy table and a couple of blocks of wood to stop it rolling around. You will need to tap and spile the beer before serving. It’s not a tricky process and one we can explain to you when you collect. We’ll lend you the tap & spile.

As we don’t use cask finings in our beer, it is naturally hazy and there is no need to leave it to settle for a long time before serving. Depending on where it’s going to be served, to keep it cool, you might also want to order an Ice Blanket. These can be ordered from our online shop.

Due to the weight of the cask and the fact that we do need it back, these are for collection from the brewery only and it is worth giving us a ring to double check we have the beer you’re after before placing an order. Sadly we can’t offer casks on a sale or return basis.

A returnable £50 deposit will be required for the cask & tap (in cash or a cheque) when you come to collect.

How Much Does A Pint Of Home Brew Cost?

I am sure there is a great divide between reasons why people get into home brewing, saving money being one of those benefits that may be the whole reason you started brewing in the first place but for others just an added bonus.

It is a definite benefit though that brewing beer cost far less than buying it. Our premium beer kits as an example cost between 1.20 – 1.40 a pint which if you take a look at the range on offer, they are not your average supermarket beers.

One of the things I have lost track of is the amount of money I’ve saved myself over the past few years. I go to the pub quite frequently and find myself paying up to £3.

50 a pint in some places (I live in Cornwall).

It may be in part due to the cost of drinking out that we find more and more of our pubs closing and people going to the supermarket and buying the cheaper beer they can find on offer at the time.

I have no problem with what type of beer people drink whether it be light, fizzy mass produced lager or the “craft beer” that seems to cost a whole lot more than the former. I can say however I can brew a batch of beer for cheaper than anything I can get in my local supermarket. I don’t have to wait for offers on my favourite type of beer, I’ll just buy the ingredients and brew it.

The amount of experience you have as a brewer will affect how much it costs to brew. English brewery cask units – Wikipedia

Capacities of brewery casks were formerly measured and standardised according to a specific system of English units. The system was originally based on the ale gallon of 282 cubic inches (4.62 L; 1.22 US gal).

In United Kingdom and its colonies, with the adoption of the imperial system in 1824, the units were redefined in terms of the slightly smaller imperial gallon (1.2 US gal; 4.5 L).

The older units continued in use in the United States.

Historically the terms beer and ale referred to distinct brews.[nb 1] From the mid 15th century until 1803 in Britain “ale” casks and “beer” casks differed in the number of gallons they contained.

Seven wine casks, each of a different size

Tun

The tun is a cask that is double the size of a butt and is equal to eight barrels and has a capacity of 252 imperial gallons (303 US gal; 1,150 L). Invented in Brentford, a tun was used in local breweries to measure large amounts of alcohol.[citation needed]

/* originally 256 but 252 by 1347 barrels in 1454 were 32 gallons (32*8=256) 1/8th the original Tun noted here to correct previous edits that said math was wrong [2] */

Butt (Imperial)

The butt of beer was equal to half a tun, two hogsheads, three tierce, or 108 imperial gallons (129.7 US gal; 491.0 L).

Hogshead

The hogshead of beer and ale was equal to a quarter of a tun, half a butt, a tierce and a half, or three kilderkins. This unit is close in size to the wine hogshead.

hogshead (Ale)
In the mid-15th century the ale hogshead was defined as 48 ale or beer gallons (221.8 L). In 1688 the ale hogshead was redefined to be 51 ale or beer gallons (235.7 L). In 1803 the ale hogshead was again redefined to be 54 ale or beer gallons (249.5 L), equivalent to the beer hogshead.
hogshead (Beer)

Barrel

The barrel of beer or ale was equal to two kilderkins or 2⁄3 of a beer or ale hogshead. This is somewhat larger than the wine barrel.

barrel (Ale)
As with the hogshead the ale barrel underwent various redefinitions. Initially 32 ale or beer gallons (147.9 L), it was redefined in 1688 as 34 ale or beer gallons (157.1 L) and again in 1803 as 36 ale or beer gallons (166.4 L).
barrel (Beer)
The beer barrel was defined as 36 ale or beer gallons until the adoption of the imperial system.

The adoption of the imperial system saw the beer or ale barrel redefined to be 36 imperial gallons, which is exactly
9,987.09958 cubic inches or approximately 163.659 litres.[nb 2]
